Once again, it is time for the KCRW's 8th Grade Essay Contest. The winners of the Contest will receive a cash prize of $125, pictures and articles in the newspaper, and a trip to Springfield in April to serve as page on the House floor, thanks to our sponsor, Representative Kay Hatcher. At that time, it may be possible to have a brief visit with Representative Tom Cross, House Minority Leader, and State Senator Chris Lauzen.
Letters regarding this 8th grade Essay Contest have been sent to all middle school principals in Kendall County that have 8th grade, including Cross Lutheran, Parkview Christian, St. Mary's, and St. Luke's Lutheran. The essays can be done as a class project, or any individual 8th grade student in a public, private or home school may participate.
The topics have often centered around the Articles of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. This year we will focus on the responsibility of citizens to participate in government.
This years topic reads:
“The founders of the Constitution believed that the main
purpose of government was to protect people’s basic rights.
All citizens have the right and responsibility in governing our
nation. List three ways of participating in government and
tell why it would be an effective way of protecting your rights.”
The essay should be no more than two pages long, double spaced.
I hope you choose to participate in the contest. The families of those
who have won before have been amazed to see behind the scenes of
our State Government and meet the Legislators up close. And, of
course, to watch the debate and voting while the students are on the
floor is very exciting.
Essays should be postmarked no later than February 17 and mailed
along with the entry form to:

Winners will be contacted by mid-March.
